Shipping Sunday #1

Hosted by Space Between the Spines

So, there's probably some sort of meme about this somewhere, but I haven't seen any so I decided to make my very own. In this meme, you talk about your favorite coupling in a book, or pit two "teams" against each other. We all have those "Team" stickers on our blogs, so why not devote a post or two to defending them? If you like this idea, feel free to do your own posts, just make sure to keep my link. Feel free to share your posts with me as well! I'd love to get to know all my blogger friends and followers a little better. =)

For the very first Shipping Sunday, I'm pitting Puck and Ash from The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa!

I kind of feel like this comparison is a little unfair. The majority of Iron Fey fans, like myself, are Ash shippers, meaning they prefer Meghan with the Unseelie Court Prince, Ash. The fact that the entire fourth novel is devoted to him really makes things unfair, as we get a whole book to see and understand Ash's feelings for Meghan. Poor Puck didn't really stand a chance once the fourth one came about, and by then he'd really given up any hope of winning Meghan's affections anyway, but I still think that Puck is an amazing character and friend, so that's why I decided to make this post about the Fey boys.

Team Ash? I'll be the first to admit I'm "Team Ash." Perhaps it's because I like the mysterious, dangerous types, but that isn't always the case. Actually, I had a hard time liking Ash in the first book, despite Meghan's instant connection with him. I was convinced that he had something up his sleeve - that Kagawa was using him as a literary tool or something - but he turned out to be genuinely good, despite his Unseelie heritage. There were some actions and behaviors that I thought were a bit questionable, but I found that that made him a little more real. Considering his roots, the fact that he was willing to help Meghan in the first place, despite the trouble he'd get into with Mab, really made me rethink my liking of him. And when he ultimately decided to be exiled so he could be with Meghan - I admit, I full on swooned. The fourth book, which details how far his love is willing to go, is just the icing on the literary cake for Ash shippers like myself.

Team Puck? I can certainly see why others might ship Puck, though. Unlike Ash, Puck has been by Meghan side for as long as she can remember. He lived next door to her in the mortal realm, was her best friend, and - unbeknownst to her - had protected Meghan from the dangers of the fey world while she was a child. The big plus in this relationship is that their love grew slowly and more realistically than most. While Ash was a prime example of "insta-love," Puck's adoration was from years of caring and being a friend. Even when it became apparent to him that Meghan was falling for the Prince, he continued to stay by her side on all the dangers she led him in. In many instances, he saved her life even then. The fact that he goes with Ash on his quest in the final book proves that his love for Meghan, though unrequited, is definitely true. Unfortunately for Puck, this is one of the many instances in which the good guy finishes last.

My final verdict?

So what do you think? Are you Team Ash or Team Puck? Feel free to tell me in the comments! I'd also like to know if this is a meme that you'd enjoy seeing more of in the future.

  1. I've only read the first book so far, so I can't make an official decision, but I was leaning more toward Team Puck, or maybe even (gasp!) neither. I admit that Ash was hot and swoon-worthy, but those things just weren't enough to keep me interested. Plus, what sane girl would be attracted to a guy who said he kinda wanted to kill her? I really wanted more emotional response and bonding between the characters, but it just seemed like the action scenes came one after the other, for the most part. Hopefully Kagawa will sway my decision to Team Ash in the following books.

But for now, I'll have to choose Puck. He's sweet, despite his fiery disposition. He has protected Meghan her whole life, sometimes at his own expense, both from school bullies and man-eating trolls. The "bad guy," character may be temping, but I'll go with the guy who would always have my back.

    1. Haha, I definitely understand how you feel. I was pretty hesitant to trust Ash in the first book as well. And the insta-love was pretty off-putting, but I think Kagawa will do a pretty good job in getting you to sway to the other team once you read the next couple of books. At any rate, Puck is still a great choice for Meghan, too, but hey - I guess I like the dark and dangerous types. ;)

  2. I haven't read these books yet, but this was interesting to see how the "teams" go about. Interesting meme!! I'll hopefully do one next Sunday once I figure out who I prefer lol

    1. Thanks, Brittnee! You should definitely read the series some day! And Shipping Sunday doesn't have to be Ash/Puck - it can be any couple or ship that you like. =) I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

  3. Well, to be honest, I've only read book one so my opinion on this may be very biaised--plus it was like 1.5 years ago!! O.o But, anyway, I do love Puck the most. Ash has his charm (hmm yeah) too but Puck is funny, loyal, cute and there for main character (forgot the name!) Oh yeah Meghan. Ash is more mysterious though. Ugh, this is hard. XD

    1. Haha, sounds like you need to pick them back up! ;) But I can definitely understand how people who are early in the series ship Meghan/Puck. Plus Puck is pretty adorable. :3

      But Ash... Mmmmm... Lol.

  5. That's a great meme! I hope it's okay, that I also did it on my blog - I linked you, of course! :)

I haven't read The Iron Fey yet but it's definitely on my TBR list and from your opinion on those 2 handsome males ... I think I would prefer Ash too. He looks gorgeous and I have a thing for the bad/dangerous and mysterious guys. Always. *sigh*

  6. Of course! It was great seeing your post. I love the Grisha boys! <3

And, yes, Ash is pretty awesome and swoon worthy. You'll have to give me a final verdict of what you think once you read them all. ;)
